چکیده

A wireless communication channel can be characterized by a center of frequency (Fc) and a channel width (Fw). Recent studies suggest that, in the presence of changing environmental conditions, adjusting the channel width of a communication channel might improve network variables like throughput and power consumption. This thesis focuses on the effect that variable channel widths may have on the performance of long distance IEEE 802.11 mesh networks, in particular on the Tegola network, a network deployed at the Scottish Highlands by researchers from the University of Edinburgh. One of the main contributions of this work is towards the understanding of how variable channel widths could be used to improve the performance of wireless long distance links affected by tidal effects.

Performance of the Wavelet Transform-Neural Network Based Receiver for DPIM in Diffuse Indoor Optical Wireless Links in Presence of Artificial Light Interference

Artificial neural network (ANN) has application in communication engineering in diverse areas such as channel equalization, channel modeling, error control code because of its capability of nonlinear processing, adaptability, and parallel processing. On the other hand, wavelet transform (WT) with both the time and the frequency resolution provides the exact representation of signal in both doma...

Design of a Low-Latency Router Based on Virtual Output Queuing and Bypass Channels for Wireless Network-on-Chip

Wireless network-on-chip (WiNoC) is considered as a novel approach for designing future multi-core systems. In WiNoCs, wireless routers (WRs) utilize high-bandwidth wireless links to reduce the transmission delay between the long distance nodes. When the network traffic loads increase, a large number of packets will be sent into the wired and wireless links and can...

802.11g Long-distance Measurements: Antenna Placement and Orientation

With the increasing popularity of 802.11 wireless technology, such equipment has recently been used to set up long distance links for wireless mesh networks. To be able to increase the range of 802.11 equipment directional antennas are required. In this paper, we investigate the effects of interference between collocated directional antennas, which would be the case for a typical multi-hop node...

Design, Implementation, and Evaluation of new MAC Protocols for Long Distance 802.11 Networks

802.11 MAC is based on Carrier Sense Multiple Access with Collision Avoidance (CSMA/CA) and was designed to be used in an indoor environment where a small number of wireless nodes share a common channel. It has been shown in Digital Gangetic Plains project that 802.11 hardware can be used beyond its intended use of WLANs by connecting long distance wireless links spread over tens of kilometers....

A Novel Multicast Tree Construction Algorithm for Multi-Radio Multi-Channel Wireless Mesh Networks

Many appealing multicast services such as on-demand TV, teleconference, online games and etc. can benefit from high available bandwidth in multi-radio multi-channel wireless mesh networks. When multiple simultaneous transmissions use a similar channel to transmit data packets, network performance degrades to a large extant. Designing a good multicast tree to route data packets could enhance the...
